Horse Trainer/Breeding
Widden Stud Australia located in the Hunter Valley, NSW and also in Riddells Creek, Victoria currently accepting applicants for the role of Horse Trainer/Breeding and Horse Trainer/Breeding - Stallions.
The roles are full time, and the successful applicant will work with either stallions, broodmares, foals, young stock and/or yearlings. We are looking for a motivated, determined & experienced individual who has professional horse stud experience.
The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of industry best practice, with either international experience or a thorough understanding of the global trends of the thoroughbred industry.
Horse Trainer/Breeding
Duties will include:
- Overseeing daily care and supervision of horses
- Early education of young stock
- Foaling, including pre- and post-natal care of broodmares and foals
- Assisting Veterinarians with ultrasound/reproduction examination including assisting in birthing foals and administering medical treatment to foals
- Monitoring mare ovulation and pregnancy
Horse Trainer/Breeding - Yearlings
Duties will include:
- Training and preparing horses for major sales
- Educating horses to be groomed and accept bridle, head collar, rug etc.
- Teaching horses to walk, stand and parade correctly
- Parade and caring for horses at sales
- Overseeing daily care and supervision of horses
- Re-educating horses to resolve problems such as biting and kicking
Horse Trainer/Breeding - Stallions
Duties will include:
- Educating stallions in breeding shed routine
- Monitoring and maintaining the health and condition of the stallions
- Re-educate stallions to resolve bad habits such as biting and kicking or inappropriate behaviour with mares
- Assisting with all daily duties required in the stallion barn including exercising and lunging.
- Overseeing daily care and supervision of horses
The salary will be above award – in the range of $65,000 to $75,000 per annum depending upon the skill set and level of responsibility.

Essential Skills:
All applicants must have a minimum of 3-years full time professional experience in the role or a relevant qualification and at least 2 years full time professional experience in the role.
In addition, the following will be required:
- Knowledge and experience of horse training and handling methods specific to thoroughbred breeding
- Proven ability to train and educate young horses
- Proven as reliable workers, with excellent horsemanship skills
- Knowledge of safe operation of all equipment and use of personal protective equipment
