THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Royal Randwick Racecourse Manager, the Assistant Racecourse Manager will supervise the ongoing maintenance of the course proper, training tracks, stable complex and grounds at Royal Randwick Racecourse. The successful applicant will be instrumental in ensuring the iconic racecourse is presented in the best possible condition and contribute to making Royal Randwick a premier racing and training facility.
Key accountabilities of the role include:
- Leading a large team, managing and improving staff performance;
- Conducting Penetrometer readings, soil sampling and water testing and implement fertilising programmes;
- Calculating poison usage and provide usage and safety advice to grounds persons;
- In conjunction with the Racecourse Manager, supervise major development projects and track reconstruction;
- Coordinating and supervise activities for barrier set up on race days, jump-outs and barrier trials and assist in the running of barrier trials held at Royal Randwick;
- Setting daily, weekly and monthly priorities regarding track maintenance in conjunction with the Racecourse Manager;
- Making recommendations to the Racecourse Manager on improvements or innovations on matters relating to track maintenance, grounds, training and stable operations at Royal Randwick;
- Leading by example by role modelling a commitment to Safety across the organisation
- Any other ad-hoc duties as required
THE RIGHT FIT
To be successful in the role, the right fit will possess:
- Turf management experience in the maintenance of equine racing and training surfaces;
- Supervisory skills and the ability to coordinate, motivate and performance manage team members;
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;
- Sound time management and organisational skills;
- General operational and mechanical maintenance skills;
- Working knowledge and understanding of the relevant WHS legislation;
- Sound literacy and numeracy skills;
- Computer literacy and skills in the use of Microsoft Office;
- Sound knowledge and practical experience of handling and spraying chemicals;
- A green keeping trade certificate or a related discipline along with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the racing industry
- Strong analytical skills and the capacity to develop innovative solutions to problems;
- Sound negotiation and influencing skills and the capacity to develop and maintain strong relationships;
